My grand mother Shoshana (means Rose) was a very small woman with a simple modest look. She was born in Israel and cams from a colonist family. I adore this little lady all my life. She had a soprano voice, she sang in a chorus and she used to sing to me when ever she could. She was the best cook I knew. She used to cook only with salt and pepper. I used to stand by her when watching her cooking, and she always sang to me when I was there with her. I used to ask her - How your dishes are so good and same recipe made by others are so different? why yours is more tasty to me? She used to answer me - "I always add a dash of love".

My parents always gave me music lessons and my father was a hidden artist.

He was a diamond cutter and he was a "Master" in it. He was perfectionist in everything he did, and he was stubborn to get max knowledge in what he did.

My father's sister Sara was a painter. I totally admired her work when I was young. She gave me my first easel (hers).

I began singing when I was 12 years old. At the age of 14 I had my own band "The Bells" . At the age of 17th I had recorded my first song, and than went to the army and was in the Israeli Air force quartet.

When I've decided not to continue singing, that I want to live a "normal" life Ive decided to go to the university in Tel Aviv. I I wanted to learn Arts and Latin/Roman and old Greek in the university. My mom said - NO !!! You have to learn something practical....
I was accepted to Shenkar college and learn Textile engineering and after two years Textile design.

FOr many years I didn't do "real art" - I was too busy in raising my two kids, building my security and supporting everyone around me.

On the last three years, I am closing a circle and going back to my first love - Creation.
I am trying to add a dash of love in everything I do.

Deja-Vu by Ralph Gibson

On December 1974, I had received from a guy that I've met, this postcard.His name was Moshe Bareket.
On the back of this postcard was printed - Deja-vu, Photographer Ralph Gibson, 1972.
I've married this guy on 1979 and we did long way together.....

Something in this picture caught me and I framed it in an old frame that I've found in the flee market. This picture is following me everywhere and now is hanging above my bench.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is always in me and with me where ever I go...

Both Gibson and Rand are my two small cells in my brain that keep me creative and open.

Two years ago I bought the jewelry book of Alexander Calder in NY. I was looking and looking and felt I wish I could do that ! (I am so bad in wire work!!!). I always envy my young sister Chen that design her jewelry and combine wire work.
Last month I was vising my son Matan and we went to the Boston museum to see the Chihuly exhibition. Ater that we took a quick tour in other zones of the museum. Suddenly I noticed a piece of jewelry that looks familiar to me - it was a huge necklace made by Calder. at that moment - I knew i have to deal with my fears working with wire.

I am in charge of challenging my friends in EtsyMetal Team of the monthly challenge. I've decided to challenge myself and the team with the inspiration of Alexander Calder. Victoria Takahashi aka experimetal gave me a starter to it :-)

From the first moment this brooch caught my eyes and I've decided to go for it.

I didn't want to make a brooch.

I like it look in a way like a paisley and a peacock feather.

I've decided to follow Calder technique - wiring, hammering, cold connections...

I am such a restless person.

I have urge to learn and try. Nothing can stop me ....
I always was like that.... I am the kind person that need to be busy all day (and night) :-)
Yesterday, after days of reading and searching and researching, learning and consolidation and of course preparing all I need....I open my mind and heart to enameling....

These are my first 6 tiny charms made of fine silver and than gold plated (in my studio) that I made yesterday.

I woke up this morning and the first thing that I saw is - this. I had to take this picture and show you....

I had finished the etching pieces to two charms.

I wonder if it will make interesting earrings or two pendants.

One thing that I forgot is to stamp them before etching!

I love patterns - that's what made me want to do etching.
I usually etch silver in the traditional way with the ferric nitrate.
I really don't like working with it therefore I decided to try "green" etching .
Today was my learning day ! and it worked for me amazingly !!!

What I used ....

One 9V battery

2 cables with alligators

Plastic or glass pot
Water
Regular sea salt

The formula is 7 gram salt to 100 gram water :-) If you add more salt it will not affect the etching !!!

Resistants (I used PNP and nail polish)

2 metalic plates
Anode - the positive - The metal will be etched (I used silver)
Cathode - the negative - The metal will produce bubbles (I used stainless steel)

It took about 2 hours to nice deep etching - the details are well seen!

It was quite strange when I took it of the etching pot. The surface was high when I expected it to be deep in the metal - only after cleaning the PNP I figured that it chips out! Nice surprise :-)

I was rubbed twice at home and all my jewelry collection has gone.
Since than I limited myself buying jewelry (I used to buy vintage handmade jewelry, and I had huge collection).
My father was a diamond dealer and manufacturer. The day I was born he made 3 diamonds that I got when I was 18. The burglars dropped one earring with a small diamond, the other two diamond he manufacture the same day gone too.

What do you wear?

These are the jewelry that I never go out without them.

I never take off the small diamond pendant I made (memory from my father).

This one I too never take off too - it's a closed long link necklace that I got from my mother. It goes from mother to daughter in the family (The firstborn) - I am the forth generation. It will go to my daughter when the time comes. I put it on my wrist 7 times or on my neck 3 times.

On my left hand I wear Yellow gold ring I made with Emerald. My family name Bareket means Emerald.

On my right hand I wear a wedding ring and Diamonds and Rubies Ring.

On my ears I always go with those cute 24K yellow gold stud earrings and usually I wear huge earrings with them.

and last is my watch

What is your favorite piece (or pieces) from your private collection?
Hmm that's hard to say..... I guess my Emerald ring and my watch :-)

How many finished pieces do you keep for yourself and why?
I have few pieces that I keep... these pieces one of a kind that I know I will not make again. Usually they are big and heavy and from the first moment I make them I know it's mine.

Continue giving Art Clay lessons

The hard part - My wishful:

Create line of jewelry

I have a feeling that this year will be a good one ... I don't know why.... It must be.....

I've chosen to open my RAW project with Rhodonite - a stone of luck in the field of love, and enable healthy building of contact. Opens the heart, enables energetic generosity and understanding.

Do you take custom orders? What kind of custom work do you do or not do? What has been your favorite custom piece? (include pictures if possible)

Do you take custom orders?

This pendant is my first sale on Etsy, it was custom order through Alchemy to beautiful lady that is one on my virtual friends.

I LOVE making custom orders! My motto is "if you have a dream I cam make it happen".

I enjoy the interaction between me and my customers.

Most of my custom clients in time are my friend - Most of them are virtually friend - but I fell I know them. I am trying to know them through our conversations.

When I began working on Etsy my son told me - don't get too involved with your customers. i didn't listen.... It's not part of my personality - I love to know who is behind the request - it make me understand the needs and make something that will reflect my customer wish.

What my customers feel about it?

I'll quote one of them:

"I received my gorgeous custom pendant in the mail today, and it looks even more beautiful "in person" than the pictures show. Inbar was a real joy to work with, friendly, knowledgeable, and above all very creative. She patiently worked with me until we "ironed out" all the details of this very special design, and she produced a wonderful piece of wearable art in a very short time. I would recommend Inbar in a heartbeat to anyone who is after a piece of true jewelry art."

Most of my customers are returning back to me with ideas... we discuss them and build the final jewelry together - I am just the maker.

What kind of custom work do you do or not do?

I'll do almost any custom work. I am trying to avoid taking orders that I don't like.

I will not take work that I know it's copy.

What has been your favorite custom piece?

That a tough question :-) I almost love every custom order I make - most of it because I really love my customers :-)

I love this one - hand made trillion and oval links . The T is set with 2 citrine gemstones and ended with trillion charm etched. I made an attachment of 4 charms etched on both sides with twigs in between. Made for the amazing photographer Gail Hadani

I am so proud and honored to be part of this group of people, true artists and amazing Metalsmiths!

hmm....I am jumping to the end....

Before I say what I want - I would like to apologize in advance if I am not clear - English is not my native tongue :-) I am very nervous about this one and in the same time excited - this is a great opportunity to tell you guys what I feel about you!

I began my love story with jewelry two years ago. I left my secure job and took some jewelry lessons and fall in love!

From the day I began - I didn't stopped! I do it 7 days a week 24 hours....

I was in New York at May - June 2009. My cousin Tal Hadani Peace showed me Etsy ....No need to say - I came back home and was there same week! I open a shop and didn't know what to do with it. It took me 6 weeks to learn and begin upload my jewelry.

I learned very fast that in order to success you need to belong to a team - so naturally I got in two Israeli groups and one international. I found that I am wasting precious time on hanging around and I kept low profile!

One day when I hanged around the net and saw Etsymetal Blog - the same moment I just knew I want to be part of this group. First I saw Victoria Takahashi work. It was breath taking ! I really wanted to be her friend! Than I saw Thomasin Durgin work and I just new I have to fight for being there! I looked for the group members blogs and I fall in love with each of them!
I began to know members and get involved with some of them in Rind A Day project . It was so inspiring and motivating !

I've submitted my jury form... I didn't know if it will be yes or no.....I was too nervous....
When finally I got the desired YES - I was like a little kid!

This was on February 2010!

I've met amazing people (and I am not talking about the artists they are). I found there friendship and support ! People that cares! beautiful people!

It is strange in a way - I haven't met any of them in my life and I feel they are my best friends and I feel safe.
Working in a studio - it's you, your tools, metals and gems - you are all alone.... but I know - I just have to turn to my laptop and I will be with you guys! I am not alone !

To me - EtsyMetal is HOME!

They are so talented - looking at all the pieces they are creating make me cry ..... I want to have them all !!! WOW !

We challenge each other in projects like Project Runway, Work Of Art, Monthly Project and Charm Swap.
Our privet forum is a place you always want to be in....

It's so hard for me to express my feelings to all those wonderful people and artists!

"Inspired by Ancient Jewelry"

Etsymetal street team group conduct monthly challenge to her members.
This month challenge was "Inspired by Ancient Jewelry".

We had an exhibition of ancient jewelry "Apple of gold in pictures of silver" All items were ancient jewelry from archaeological excavations. I picked up item No.93 An earring from the

Byzantine Empire 324-638 AD. Design as moon or Basket , filigree work with drops at the end. the drops are ended with loops probably for holding beads.

I made a sterling silver pendant moon frame with 3 gold filigree loops and small charm with gorgeous 6 rays star sapphire.

This pendant is going to be a gift to my mother next week - she has a birthday on September 7th.
The 3 circle filigree - symbolize me and my two sisters...
The Sapphire is the stone of September.
And the STAR - she is a star !!!
MOM - I love you !

Project Runway season 8 episode 4 - "Hats Off To You! "

Project Runway Challenge: In this episode, the challenge was to create a look inspired by a Philip Treacy hat. Watch the episode
The EtsyMetal Translation: Create a piece of jewelry to go with one of the Philip Treacy hats

It was a great fun making this piece.
At the beginning I thought I will go for the paisley hat... I began to play with the design and planned how I am going to make it.
I was not completly happy....
I looked again at the collection and when seeing the number 10 hat design by Michael Drummond I just felt that this is the right piece for me.

I made it the same shape but upside down hand made all the way....
Sterling silver and Opal.

Project Runway season 8 episode 3 - "Party Store"

Project Runway season 8 episode 2 - "Mini Billboard"

I love challenges! I couldn't take part in episode 1.
In Episode 2 I was sure I will not take part cause my hand surgery... but I could't stay behind - I had to do something.

The Project Runway Challenge: The designers were asked to create a look that defines the Marie Claire woman. The winning look will be featured on a "billboard" in Times Square.
The EtsyMetal Translation: To make a mini billboard, use a base of 1 x 2" inches of any material and build your piece on or around this rectangle shape!

I Planed a nice one and began to do it.... and I really messed it up ! one sec of un concentrate and I've melted my frame. I than decide - I am out this week.

We had adelay in posting.... And I saw what my friends did and I had to do mine....
I did it simple cause it's still hard for me working with my hand.

Food for Thought .....

What do you eat? - I am trying not to eat in my studio. But I enjoy my dark strong cold cofee - about 5 big ones during the working day. Usually when I feel like eating I am taking nuts and watermelon. Frin time to time Robert spoils me with sesamie bar, berries and mango. At the end of day Iove to have a nice cup of home made icecream.

What won't you eat? - Bread and cookies - never !

Do you suggest any interesting pairings? - Nuts (almonds) and dates - I love the combination.

What is your favorite studio snack? - I sound boaring !!! I am trying to have health food - Almonds and other nuts are my snacks.

Include a favorite recipe - Home made icecream

I love the combination of fresh figs, dates and chestnuts.

1 1/2 - 2 cups figs and dates cubes mix

75 - 100 gr chestnuts is optional

1 cup coconut milk (coconut crean is OK too)

1 cup heavy cream

380 gr sweetened condensed milk.

Blend all in a blender.

Transfer all to ice cream maker .... freeze ..... take some.... not that much !.... sparkle with Silan and... eat .....eat..... STOP !

EtsyMetal Ring a Day SNAG Exhibit Announcement

EtsyMetal is pleased to announce that the Ring a Day Project has been accepted as an exhibit for the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) upcoming Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. The EtsyMetal team has partnered with the PUNCH Gallery for this exhibit. “RAD, a Ring a Day for 365 days” curated by Colleen Baran, Shannon Conrad and Sara Westermark will run from Thursday, May 5 to Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Represented work will range from ephemeral and conceptual art rings to functional jewelry. The exhibit will feature 365 rings, representing a ring a day and encompassing the full span of the year. The layout will also include photographic documentation of select temporary and conceptual art rings. Rings will be chosen by the EtsyMetal curators and will illustrate the highlights and accomplishments of many hundreds of international members, selected from over 10,000 rings.

The Ring a Day project (or RAD) is an open challenge to metalsmiths and other artists across the globe to make one ring a day, out of any material, for the entire year of 2010. The genesis of the Ring a Day project is based on an exercise taught by Ellen Wieske at Haystack. The Flickr project, which was initially proposed by Nina Dinoff, was intended as an EtsyMetal team challenge to set a daily routine of exploration and an experiment to see what could develop over the course of a year.

On a daily basis, the rings are created, photographed, and posted to the Ring a Day Flickr photo group by each participant. The majority of the artists represented here have discovered this project through social media networks such as Flickr, EtsyMetal, Etsy, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and of course word of mouth. This project reflects a population of metalsmiths and jewelry makers who are facile with current online technology.

The EtsyMetal blog monthly carnival is here again ! YAY !!!

This month's topic is, "If you couldn't make jewelry, what would you do instead?"

My wishful thinking is - do nothing !

but - I am realistic and I know myself - I cannot effort doing nothing and I am the kind of workaholic person...

All I did was in closed offices, air-conditioned, very mathematical work. I switched two years ago to jewelry design and metalsmith and I am so free..... so creative and most I am so happy and love what I do! I definitely want stay free, On my own !

What I would love to do...

I would love to be a photographer ! I love to be outside hanging around.

News photographer ! a lot of tension and excitement around - sound very creative, challenging, exciting and risky - hmm - I think I am going to love it.

Street Photographer will do too... I love night photography - I take Robert at night as my driver and I am taking pictures while he is driving.

I think I'll be happy with that...

Charm swap 6 - Part 1

Twice a year EtsyMetal Team condact charm swap between 20 members.
Charm Swap Six is underway, the deadline for finished charms is September 30, 2010. As with previous swaps, each of the 20 participants creates 22 charms - one for each swap member and one to be sold in the EtsyMetal shop along with a bracelet that features all of the charms. Sales from this swap will go to a charitable organization, yet to be determined.

50% of the sales proceeds will go to the designated programs.
The charms are sold on EtsyMetal team shop.

I am the curator of Charm swap 6 (in short CS6) with help of Nina Gibson in the USA.
I am taking part in this CS6 too. I am going to make Hamsa charms to my friends.

I am going to post my progress .....

I already bought the turquoise oval gemstones.

I saw the 22 Hamsa charms.

I prepared them for etching.

I made the pattern on PNP paper.

I had transferred the pattern on the silver Hamsa charms.

There is a lot of work to be done ! I will continue posting my progress in few days.

I made Vine Leaf earrings made from real Vine leafs I picked up in my garden. I made them using Art clay technique.

There is a small story behind these earrings.
I had a request from a very special young lady that her name is Carmit. She was looking for one oda kind, unique, huge and impressive natural leaf earrings. "Carmit" in Hebrew means "Vineyard". I had collected leaf all over and took pictures among them I had these vine leaf. Obviously Carmit picked up the Vine leaf !

I wake up this morning and first thing I did - I took a picture of my bench ... as we all did !

I've decided to work from home. I've build a very well equipped studio - I am missing very few machines that probably I will get soon.

My days in the studio look like that:

I make my first cup of coffee and I am going into my studio beginning in front of my laptop - my best best friend ! I am catching what I missed during my beauty sleep - when my other friends are celebrating their afternoons and evenings (I am 7 hours ahead).

Unless I have an order or project planed - I never plan what I am going to create ! I have millions of ideas but I do not plan !

I act very impulsive - I can decide - today it's pendant day... from here I take a look at my stones.... my leftovers.... everything that catches my eyes. I choose a stone - I hardly sketch (almost never) . I see it in my head .... I touch the metal - I touch the stone.... still I am in front of my bench with nothing....

I begin taking out tools... I put them in front of me - I am still playing with every thing in my hands and eyes....

I love to give myself challenges ! Last week I gave my young sister and myself a challenge (she is a metalsmith too). The challenge was to make yourself a passover gift - a pendant. I had twin stones - I gave her one of the stones - dead line march 29th and we wanted to see what's coming up from same stones different artist.Came out very interesting :-) I have to take pictures!

In this episode, the designers paired up for the challenge to create
2 looks inspired by distinct NYC neighborhoods: Harlem, Chinatown, Upper East Side or East Village.

I had framed picture I took last summer in NY china town - Mother carrying her son on her back - Both were very colorful as china town.
I made the frame from sterling silver etched with NY skyline and I LOVE NEW YORK on it too , the bezel remind me NY high buildings.
I used anti reflex glass that made me hard time taking this picture :-)

I was schlepping the "Home Center" to find cool stuff ! Suddenly saw these beautiful metal support for glass shelf (I saw "beads" in my imagination). I than found this rubber cord (for jewelry) 5mm in diameter, and I ended them with sterling silver findings.

I had design a double sided pendant from two heavy silver plates to Brad Pitt.

I called the pendant "Remember me" and etched Angelina Julie on one side and on the other her lips.

Today in the middle of the winter here we had heavy heat.

Early morning we went to buy some beer and goodies and we drove to Hertzlia marina.

Lea and Nissim were already on the Nova waiting for us - we had such a great day on the sea. We were planning our next tour to Turkey on May - I can't wait !

Etching Silver

Etching is a process that transfers image, writing etc on metal.

When thinking of etching you think black white / positive negative, mirroring and nothing too small.

Warning!

ALWAYS ADD THE NITRIC ACID TO THE WATER.
ALWAYS USE RUBBER GLOVES AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING.

WORK IN VERY VENTILATED AREA!

Neutralize Nitric Acid with Baking Soda!

What do you need for etching?

1 glass or plastic container easy to open and with a tight fitting lid for the "Etchant".
"Etchant" Nitric Acid – I add 1 part nitric acid to 4 parts water .... remember: ALWAYS ADD THE NITRIC ACID TO THE WATER AND SLOWLY !
glass or plastic container with water
Resist materials – the best list: Red Staedtler permanent Lumocolor markers, Nail polish and tapes.
baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
Sanding paper (fine) or superfine steel wool, or brass brush
Rubber gloves, plastic tweezers and Safety glasses
Styrofoam
Metal - 20-16 gage
PnP Blue Film - Photocopy resists
Laser printer
Iron
Paper towels
Curved burnisher or spoon
Household ammonia

Preparation for etching

Prepare the metal – work with sandpaper 280, 400 and 600 remove scratches. Work in one direction. File the edges until they are smooth. Clean the metal with medium Scotch. Rinse and dry.
Print your design on the PnP with laser printer (other ink will not work).
Heat the iron to “cotton” (about 250 degrees F / 120 degrees Celsius)
I iron on wood. I put paper towel on it .
Use paper towel with alcohol mixture to clean the metal on the side of your picture.
Place the image side down to the metal! Rub with your fingers to remove excess alcohol and air bubbles.
I fold the paper towel and place the metal with PnP side up like a sandwich. Put the iron on top.
Let the iron sit on the metal. The metal should be warm enough for the picture transfer. Carefully iron the metal. Lift one corner of the film and check if the image has transferred.
Remove the film and check your design. Correct with Red lumocolor and let dry.

Etching

Rinse the metal in clear water and dry it in a clean paper towel.
I use nail polish to seal areas that I don’t want to etch.
Open the solution container and lower the metal to the solution gently - try to avoid making bubbles. Etching time is varied. I check every 30 minutes. I take out the metal with the tweezers rinse it in water and look at the etching with X10 lope.
When done rinse in water and than soak it in water with baking soda to neutralize the acid and than in household ammonia
Clean the metal with Acetone if you use nail polish as sealer or any cleanser with Scotchbrite.

Now you are ready to use your etched metal.

I just love challenges !!!

EtsyMetal is holding a fun freestyle Jewelry Challenge that coincides with Project Runway episodes.

The mission for this challenge is (and I quote):
"For this to be interpreted into a jewelry challenge and to spice it up a bit, I am grasping on to the 5 statement and asking you to incorporate the number 5 somehow, your interpretation of that.
For some examples, use 5 stones, patterns of 5, the actual number 5, what does 5 mean to you? Does 5 have any special significance to you? "

Okay!

My "five" is a huge pendant cut from fine silver, build from the Number 5, and it's divided to 5 areas, and each area was etched with different lace pattern, oxidized .... and I wanted to add pearls - but I've decided to stop here! Maybe one day !

The pendant is 44mm width X 74mm high (1.75" x 2.9").

How to Oxidize Silver with Liver of Sulfur

Liver of Sulfur is a chemical you can buy from a jewelry supply vendor. It is a little stinky, like a rotten eggs. So...........make sure you work with in i a well ventilated area. Liver of sulfur looks like sharp lumpy rock like chunks

So - How do I oxidize silver?

I prepare two bowls of hot tap water that are big enough to hold the item I wish to oxidize.
I use gloves whenever I handle any kind of chemical.
In one bowl , I put a pea size chunk of liver of sulfur.
I use a plastic or wooden stick to mix the solution until the liver of sulfur dissolved.
I put my item in the hot water to warm it.
I place the item in the solution for 30 seconds and I transfer to the hot water bowl. I do it for several times until I get the desire tone - it can be purple, green and black.
When done - rinse in hot tap water and than I rinse it in cold water.

And now it is time to give it a good finish.

This is perhaps the most commonly asked question while shopping for rings online. For this reason, I have an entire web page dedicated to guiding you on how to measure your ring size, right at your home!

Ring Sizer

In order to print the ring sizer above, be sure that your printer is set to 100%. In other words, make sure that you have not reduced the print size in 'Page Setup'. You can verify that the sizer has printed correctly by measuring it with a ruler; it should measure from left to right: 3 3/8 inches.

Once you have printed the sizer, you need to cut it out and then use the following directions to find your ring size:

1. Wrap a piece of loose string around your finger. Be sure to allow for the size of your knuckle.
2. With a pen, mark the point on the string where the end meets.
3. Using the chart, place the end of the string on the left hand line next to the letter "A" and stretch the string along the sizer toward the numbers.
4. The pen mark on your string should line up with a number to indicate your ring size.
